An Overview On Data Recovery

By Mike Selvon

One of the biggest fears for computer users today is probably losing the information that is stored on their machines, therefore perpetuating the need for data recovery. This is a fear that is likely shared by Palm Pilot users and anyone else who stores files and information on any type of computerized device.

After all, if that is where your information is stored, then what happens if it is lost or deleted? As well, since these gadgets are "mechanical devices" they are at risk of breaking down at some point.

Data recovery is the process in which data or information that has been deleted, has failed, is corrupt or is inaccessible from the main storage location, is salvaged or retrieved. This process is a lifesaver for some faithful computer users.

There are many explanations for how and why you can experience lost data. It can be as simple as accidentally hitting the delete button or having a power surge. You risk losing data any time your computer's hard drive is jeopardized.

That can happen in numerous ways. For example, if your computer is hit by lightening in an electrical storm, then it can wipe out your hard drive causing you to lose valuable information. Water damage, computer viruses, corrupt files, and the age of your hardware are all issues that can affect and/or damage your hard drive.

If your HD is damaged, then you could lose all data. Today, with the ever expanding technological advances, there are many ways to help you recover data. However, if done incorrectly, then you could risk damaging the hard drive even further or overwriting what you are trying to retrieve.

It is a good idea to backup any information that is important to you, whether it is from a personal or business standpoint. However, most programs, files and operating systems have data recovery software available to reverse the process of lost data.

The type of data recovery used to retrieve the lost information will likely depend on the operating system being used. Although data can often be retrieved to some degree with "recovery programs," it is wise to consult a professional before attempting to recover lost data.

Many of the programs available overwrite the "corrupt files" which may cause you to lose what was contained in that file. So, though it is possible to recover data, it can be a very sensitive and even tedious process and should be done by a professional or someone who knows exactly what they are doing. Otherwise, you could risk losing all of the jeopardized files.

Data Recovery Services - What They Don't Tell You Out There\
By Aviv Meraro

It's not fun to lose your computer data.

Content that you worked on or used everyday cannot be accessed by your computer, and it's really valuable to you. You go to the first place you find and you are willing to pay whatever they say. You just want your information back.
Stop here.

When your data is lost you are in a situation where you have to believe the guys at the place you brought your media to.

They will lure you in with unreasonably low quotes, just to get the work done.

Then when you have sent them your hard drive you are told that the damage was much more serious and now the cost for the recovery is going to be 2 or 3 times what was quoted.

In general there are 2 cases of media failure that prevent us from accessing our data or stop us from getting to the operating system:

1. Media software failure

2. Media Hardware failure.

What you should expect:

In case of software failure in most/ all cases a recovery can be done easily by software. This process should take few hours to get the data back and save it on a CD/ DVD. The average price range for this is from $100 to $300.

Software failure can be caused because a system boot failure, files structure problem or even a virus.

Lots of places take advantage of the situation and charge the customer $500 or more on a job done within 2 hours. The customer who desperately needs the information agrees to the fee. Paying $500 for a 2 hour job? This is too much I think.

In case of a media Hardware failure it's more complicated.

Sometimes the media needs to be sent to a clean room where they break apart the media drive and "grab" the data from the plate of the media itself. This is a more complex recovery and it's more expensive ($900 up to $10000) and time consuming.

What you should know here is that sometimes even if the media is physically damaged it is still possible to save most of the data just by using software tools without complex recovery methods.
I heard of a case when the drive was physically damaged and the customer was told that the drive is being sent to the clean room lab for recovery but actually the drive has never left the office. The company charged the customer for the more expensive lab recovery other then a simple software recovery.

So, when your drive fails (and hopefully it will not) make sure you remember this before going to retrieve your data.

MMC Data Recovery
By Brian J. Link

Photographs capture memorable moments. Whether it's your baby's first steps, your son's first homerun, your daughter's prom, or your best friend's wedding, taking photographs is a very good way to hold on to the memories of any event. Because manufacturers see the importance and value of taking everyday life pictures, they have made digital cameras and even incorporated cameras into mobile phones where files are stored into a multimedia card.

But together with this innovation, a lot of people also lose their pictures because of improper use. One very common mistake that leads to loss of valuable photos is removing the memory card while the device is still on. Fortunately, there are ways to recover lost photos and other multimedia files through the use of MMC Data Recovery.

MultiMedia Card or MMC Card is a flash memory card standard that is used as storage media for several portable devices, in a form where it can be easily removed for access by a personal computer. These cards can be used in any device that supports SD cards. For example, the MMC Card is used in a digital camera to store image files. Then, by using an MMC reader, the stored images can be copied or transferred to a personal computer.

Other common devices that use the MultiMedia Card include mobile phones, pocket pcs, mp3 players, mobile communicators, PDAs, handheld computers, and other portable devices that use memory card chip storage media.

By using MMC Data Recovery, you can easily retrieve deleted photos or other multimedia files such as audio and video. Using it will allow you to recover, rescue, repair, and "undelete" any lost, overwritten, formatted, or deleted files and folders from your multimedia memory card and flash memory of your device. It is also suitable for cases where the cards are damaged, corrupted, or no longer recognized.

One option you have if you have lost data you want to retrieve is by sending your MMC to companies that offer data recovery services. Although this could be costly and time consuming, you are assured that skilled technicians and experts backed by years of experience are handling your MMC.

If you want to do it by yourself to save on time and costs, you can download or buy a software that can do MMC Data Recovery. It is easy to use and is a non-destructive restoration software. The type of digital files that you can restore depends on the data recovery software you get. Most MMC recovery software will allow you to restore jpg, jpeg, tif, gif, riff, tiff, avi, png, bmp, 3gp, mov, midi, quicktime, mpeg, and wav files among others. If you plan to recover files using data recovery software then it is best you do some research on the various options available so that you can get one that best answers your needs.

So, if you have accidentally deleted, overwrote, or corrupted files such as audio, images, or movies from your multimedia card, then it might be a good idea to get an MMC Data Recovery software, or send your MMC to experts to recover valuable data.

Mac Data Recovery
By Brian J. Link

Today, many people store lots of useful and valuable information in their computers. It can be memorable photos, favorite songs, emails, or reports and projects needed for school or work. And because of the many important data stored in the computer's hard drives, you wouldn't want to do something to erase those files. But sometimes, it just can't be helped as hard drives can crash, servers can fail, and laptops can be accidentally dropped.

Fortunately, there is such a thing as data recovery. Data recovery is a process of recovering important information that was lost as a result of a computer crash, virus attack, or hard disk malfunction. In order to recover lost data, you can send your hard drives to companies that offer data recovery services. Depending on how extreme your situation is, the company can send you the recovered files in as fast as 3 working days. Although it is a bit costly, you are assured that only skilled professionals are handling your case. Another option is to buy or download a data recovery software to retrieve lost or partial data, and minimize damage brought upon to the system.

In the event that you lose data, the first thing you should remember is to avoid panicking. Refrain from aimlessly trying to retrieve the lost data by clicking several keys. This will only make things worse. What you can do to start Mac data recovery is to pause and go over your options carefully. Do not turn off or restart your computer, thinking that it can solve your problem. Another thing you shouldn't do is surf the Internet to look for a data recovery Mac solution.

Doing all these will only cause your computer to use up the storage space occupied by your lost data. If you really have to look for a data recovery software for your mac, then it would help to use another computer. Also, refrain from running other unrelated and irrelevant programs.

Specifically, if you come across the error message "The disk is damaged do you want to initialize?" or "-127 error disk could not be used/found", this indicates that the directory structure of your disk is damaged and therefore cannot be accessed. Generally, such damage occurs when a Mac freezes in the middle of the programs and has to be restarted, or if you failed to properly shut down the computer. In order to recover files lost by such cases, the Unerase program in Symantec's Norton Utilities can be used. Just remember to choose a different drive for the destination of your recovered files, and not the crashed disk or any of its partitions.

Those are some tips you can do when you want to do Mac data recovery. Remember that if you lose data, the first thing you have to do is avoid panicking and opening several applications not related to data recovery. This could only cause your computer to replace the storage space formerly occupied by the lost data with newer data, and thus could be harder to recover. Not all hope is lost if you lose your data. Either you download a data recovery software of send your hard drive to experts.

The Basics of Laptop Data Recovery
By Brian J. Link

With the rise of a mobile lifestyle and telecommuting, laptops have proliferated and become almost as common as the home computer. In some instances the laptop has become the home computer. The reason for the popularity is the portability it affords the computer user. And with the ability to take the laptop anywhere, this leads to unexpected damage from the elements and to heavy wear and tear.

Because the laptop was designed for mobility, this makes it more prone to damage. Aside from the regular wear and tear from lugging around the computer, there are greater risks for accidents. Accidentally pouring coffee over the laptop, or dropping it, running the car over the case, or even sitting on the laptop can damage the unit. Physical damage to the laptop case can make it unbootable.

In most instances, the laptop is a secondary computer or is wired to an office LAN, it is prudent to regularly save data to a desktop or a server. In case of loss, a copy of important data is stored at the office or at home. Backup utilities take advantage of this connectivity and can schedule an automatic backup of files to the desktop computer or the office file server.

Frequently, laptops come with a recovery disk CD. The laptop recovery disk CD contains the compressed hard disk contents prior to the laptop use. In case the hard disk fails, or the user wants a full re-write, or re-install of the laptop, the laptop is booted up from the laptop recovery CD and a full reinstall is done. For a laptop data recovery, a full restore from existing backup can be done after the system has been re-installed.

The laptop recovery disk CD is not to be confused with the Windows recovery disk. This is also different from recovery disks from data recovery programs. The Windows recovery disk is used when trying to boot a computer with a corrupted hard disk, or a computer which fails to boot. It repairs the Windows system files. Recovery disks from backup and recovery software vendors allow the user to boot up the disk and do a laptop data recovery by restoring the hard disk data from a backup.

Some laptops have intelligent hard disks that help avert data loss. The Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART) for hard disks informs the user of probability of a hard disk failure. A laptop with SMART hard disks would inform the user if a hard disk crash is inevitable. This gives the user enough time to back up important hard disk data. It also allows the user the luxury of going to a service center to diagnose the computer before the hard disk fails.

In case of accidental damage, there are laptop data recovery services, which the owner can avail of. These laptop data recovery services are full service repair bureaus which check the computer parts and not just the hard disk. The owner sends the unit to the service center for laptop data recovery, laptop checkup and diagnostics and repair. For laptop data recovery the hard disk is isolated and an image of the hard disk data is created prior to repairing it.

With these service bureaus the laptop data recovery can be done even if the hard disk is completely damaged or is not working. Laptop data recovery can be done for inaccessible drives or partitions, corrupted files or disks, virus attacks, overwrites, accidental file deletion, laptop hardware component failure, hard disk crashes, fire, flood and water damage, media contamination or damage, and accidental formatting or partitioning.

Laptop data recovery may be a longer process than data recovery for a desktop computer. There are more reasons for a hard disk failure or laptop damage to happen. However, for different scenarios of hard disk failure, boot up failure or data loss, there are different laptop data recovery solutions available to the laptop user.

Data Recovery is Something Anyone Can Suddenly Face
By Ken Roberts

Data recovery is not a planned event. No matter what you do to protect your data, accidents can happen in the blink of an eye. You can quickly lose data in the recycle bin or by using the shift+delete function on a file or folder by mistake. Files lost like this are inaccessible without data recovery.

You can approach hard disk data recovery in one of two ways: by taking the necessary steps to prevent losing data in the first place, or by searching for the best solution when you erase data unexpectedly. Let's see where you stand.

Software recovery choices

Free data recovery software is something anyone can appreciate. Many free recovery utilities promise immediate results. But you get what you pay for. You don't want to end up repeating the recovery process over and over. It isn't all fun and games, so you want to choose the right utility the first time.

Another option is choosing less expensive recovery software solutions. This is considered a super discount compared to the cost of professional services. Most of this software cost around the same price as lunch at a local restaurant. More advanced programs cost around a hundred American dollars. Both of these solutions are considered a bargain if they help you recover your files.

Data recovery specialists

Choosing to have your files restored by data recovery specialists implies that your files are worth something to you. You are willing to pay the higher price point to have them recovered. The average cost of professional services is between five hundred bucks and two grand; a specific cost is given when the problem is known.

Saying it short and sweet

If you are lucky, your files are waiting for you in the backup server. However, there are times when they do not do what they are suppose to do, which means start looking for file recovery possibilities. This might mean finding a data recovery pro that uses the most effective and cautious methods in recovering data. But you know there are still cheaper solutions to try first, like data recovery software programs. Your final option is having a tech you know do it for you if you don't feel confident about doing the process by yourself.

Finally, if your disk drive is functioning properly you will all data recovery methods to consider; but that's not always the case. When your hard drive is so messed up it won't even boot up - well - it's time to look for a data recovery specialist. But if it's working fine you can utilize a data recovery software utility.
